Fishing Harbor Quay Wall Fender Pad Refit

Background

A regional fishing port needed to refit ~180 m of quay wall after harsh winters destroyed the original pine timber fender boards. The harbor wanted a maintenance-free solution that would not absorb water, rot, or splinter.

Specification Chosen

• UHMWPE PE1000 sheet, 50 mm thick × 1500 × 1000 mm
• Black UV-stabilized (saltwater + UV exposure)
• Pre-drilled M16 countersunk bolts on 300 mm centers
• 120 pads = ~3.5 tons in 1 × 20 FCL

Why UHMWPE Over Timber

1. Zero water absorption — won't rot or freeze-crack
2. Self-lubricating — fishing boats glide off without paint scuffs
3. Recyclable at end of life (timber treated with creosote is hazardous waste)
4. 20+ year service life vs. 4 – 6 years for treated timber

Cost Comparison

Initial UHMWPE cost was ~2.3× treated timber cost, but lifecycle (replacement + disposal) cost over 20 years was ~38 % lower for UHMWPE.
